Boy on the seahorse

Welcome to Puerto Vallarta: How a Sculpture Originally Designed in 1960 Still Welcomes Tourists and Expats Today

No visit to Puerto Vallarta is complete without a stop at the iconic Boy on the Seahorse sculpture on the Malecón. Standing proudly along the city's famous oceanfront promenade, this beloved landmark has welcomed millions of tourists, snowbirds, and expats for decades. More than just a popular photo spot, it has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Puerto Vallarta and its warm, welcoming spirit. And the original picture above has been an integral part of both houses we’ve owned since moving here to Puerto Vallarta.

Originally designed in 1960 by Mexican sculptor Rafael Zamarripa, the Boy on the Seahorse captures the city's lifelong connection to the sea. The sculpture depicts a young boy confidently riding a seahorse through the waves, representing adventure, freedom, and the coastal lifestyle that continues to attract visitors from around the world.

The original bronze sculpture was installed near Los Muertos Beach, where it quickly became a favorite landmark. After suffering damage from storms and ocean conditions, a larger version was created and eventually installed at the north end of the Malecón. Today, it remains one of the most photographed attractions in Puerto Vallarta.

For many travelers, a visit to the Boy on the Seahorse marks the official beginning of their Puerto Vallarta vacation. Families gather for photos, couples capture engagement and anniversary memories, and first-time visitors often make it their first stop while exploring downtown. It's also a familiar sight for returning visitors who make a point of visiting the sculpture every time they return to the city.

Like us, the sculpture holds special meaning for the thousands of expats who now call Puerto Vallarta home. Many first visited on vacation, fell in love with the city's beaches, culture, and welcoming community, and eventually decided to stay. For them, the Boy on the Seahorse represents not only a favorite vacation destination but also a place where new chapters in life began.

Its location on the Malecón makes it the perfect starting point for exploring downtown Puerto Vallarta. From the sculpture, you can stroll along the waterfront while enjoying local restaurants, art galleries, colorful sculptures, artisan markets, live music, and street performers. As evening arrives, spectacular sunsets over Banderas Bay create one of the city's most memorable views, making the sculpture an even more popular gathering place.

Over the years, the Boy on the Seahorse has appeared on postcards, souvenirs, travel guides, and countless social media posts. Its image has become synonymous with Puerto Vallarta, instantly reminding travelers of ocean breezes, friendly locals, beautiful sunsets, and unforgettable vacations.

More than 60 years after it was first created, the Boy on the Seahorse continues to do exactly what it has always done…welcome people to one of Mexico's most beloved beach destinations. While Puerto Vallarta has grown into a world-class resort city, this timeless sculpture remains a symbol of its history, charm, and hospitality.
